Children's Music Teacher in Costa Mesa Charged With Felony Sexual Assault

A children’s music teacher from Costa Mesa has been charged with a dozen felonies for sex crimes committed against two young girls, and authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying additional victims. Anthony “Tony” Philip Bruccoliere, age 49, was arrested on February 11 after two teenage girls reported that he had molested them over a period of years between 2008 and 2019. “This man has become a parent’s worst nightmare by preying on innocent young girls,” said Orange County District Lawyer Todd Spitzer. “The pain and suffering of sexual assault doesn’t just end when the physical attack is over; the psychological damage continues throughout the victims’ entire life,” Spitzer said. He was charged with several felonies by the Orange County District Lawyer’s office. Ex-Orange County deputy gets 4 months in jail for stealing from dead victims

A former Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputy has pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four months in jail for stealing the credit cards of dead victims he came across while on the job, according to court records. Steve Hortz, 43, of San Dimas, pleaded guilty on Feb. 22 to single felony counts of burglary and grand theft and single misdemeanor counts each of burglary, identity theft and grand theft by embezzlement, records show. He was placed on two years of formal probation and must report to jail by June 3. Hortz responded on Aug. 19, 2020, to a woman’s Yorba Linda home for a welfare check and found her dead inside, said Kimberly Edds, spokeswoman for the Orange County District Lawyer’s Office. While at the home, Hortz stole three credit cards and later used them to make thousands of dollars worth of unauthorized online purchases, though most of the purchases were declined. He was charged with those crimes in September. Hortz was previously indicted in 2020 on several charges...

Hearings for leadership in fatal AAV sinking wrap up at Camp Pendleton

After two investigations and months devising new rules and procedures to prevent another deadly training accident with its amphibious forces, the Marine Corps is now deciding whether six men in various command roles should keep their military careers. The men each made decisions in the training and preparations for a 2020 deployment, including the planning and carrying out of a raid by a platoon of amphibious assault vehicles onto San Clemente Island. During the trip back to an awaiting Navy ship, one of the AAVs sank, killing eight Marines and a naval corpsman – the deadliest amphibious training accident in the service branch’s history. Convened in a spare courtroom-like facility at Camp Pendleton – troops training near could be heard – Marine Corps lawyers made a case for why the men should be demoted or even removed from the military – these hearings are only about positions in the Corps, none of the Marines are facing charges. One board was held back east at Marine Corps Base Qua...

Orange County District Lawyer Spitzer Hits Back at Accuser in Harassment Claim

Orange County District Lawyer Todd Spitzer Wednesday fired back at a retired top-level prosecutor who filed a legal claim alleging she was subjected to retaliation for raising issues of sexual harassment and required disclosure of evidence to defense attorneys in two capital cases. Tracy Miller, who filed the claim against the county on Tuesday, said she was forced to retire early, alleging she was continuously undermined and marginalized for alerting officials to alleged sexual harassment on the part of retired prosecutor Gary LoGalbo, and for questioning the handling of the prosecutions of murder defendants Jamon Buggs and Aminadab Gaxiola Gonzalez. Several prosecutors are suing the county based on sexual and racial harassment claims stemming from allegations regarding comments made by LoGalbo, a close friend of Spitzer. But Spitzer on Wednesday accused Miller and recently fired prosecutor Ebrahim Baytieh of orchestrating a coordinated effort to smear his name ahead of a re-electi...

Biden to nominate Ketanji Brown Jackson for Supreme Court

By COLLEEN LONG, MICHAEL BALSAMO and ZEKE MILLER WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Friday will nominate federal appeals court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, the White House said, making her the first Black woman selected to serve on a court that once declared her race unworthy of citizenship and endorsed segregation. In Jackson, Biden delivers on a campaign promise to make the historic appointment and to further diversify a court that was made up entirely of white men for almost two centuries. He has chosen an attorney who would be the high court’s first former public defender, though she also possesses the elite legal background of other justices. Jackson would be the current court’s second Black justice — Justice Clarence Thomas, a conservative, is the other — and just the third in history. Biden planned to introduce Jackson in remarks at the White House Friday afternoon, where Jackson was also expected to speak, the White House said. She would also be ...

Live Updates: Biden Imposes New Russia Sanctions; Ukraine Loses Chernobyl

Russia launched a wide-ranging attack on Ukraine, hitting cities and bases with airstrikes or shelling, as civilians piled into trains and cars to flee. Ukraine’s leadership said dozens of people have been killed so far in what it called a “full-scale war” targeting the country from the east, north and south. President Vladimir Putin deflected global condemnation and cascading new sanctions and threatened any foreign country attempting to interfere. President Joe Biden and other world leaders moved to impose heavy economic sanctions on Russia in hopes of making the Kremlin pay so heavy a price that it will change course. At least 57 Ukrainians have died and another 169 have been injured, according to Ukraine’s Minister of Health. Here’s a look at the latest developments in the conflict over Ukraine and the security crisis in Eastern Europe. Ex-Coronado Resident Gets Tentative 3-Month Sentence for Capitol Breach

A former Coronado resident was tentatively sentenced Monday to three months in prison for taking part in the breach of the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021. A federal judge deferred the sentence until March 15, at which point Jeffrey Alexander Smith , 34, could receive custody, to be followed by two years of probation, with 200 hours of community service. The sentence was deferred until the court could resolve a legal issue of whether Smith can face both custody and probation. Smith pleaded guilty last year to a misdemeanor count of parading, demonstrating and picketing in a capitol building for taking part in the siege. Prosecutors were seeking five months imprisonment, while Smith’s attorneys requested probation and community service. According to the prosecution’s sentencing memorandum, Smith and others moved iron benches that were placed in front of closed doors in the Capitol building. On the other side of the doors were a “mob of rioters” whom Smith was trying to let in, ...

Lifeguards Save Injured, Beached Dolphin in Malibu

The Los Angeles County Fire Department, Lifeguard Division responded Monday to Point Dume State Beach on the coast of Malibu where a beached dolphin laid injured next to the surf. Approaching the vulnerable mammal, lifeguards retrieved the animal from the shore before Marine Wildlife Rescue arrived and took the lead. Servicing areas from the Pacific Palisades to Long Beach and Catalina Island, Marine Wildlife Rescue responds to stranding events wherein a living or deceased marine mammal has beached. When whales or dolphins strand themselves, the underlying cause is usually illness or injury, but can also result from navigation errors or extreme weather. Most beached marine mammals end up dying, according to a rescue nonprofit. Sharing the experience in a tweet, LA County lifeguards said, “Sending our best wishes for a speedy recovery!” This story uses functionality that may not work in our app. Click here to open the story in your web browser. Bizarre Dog Attack Leaves Several Injured in Lancaster, as Man Dies of Unspecified Reason

Sheriff’s homicide detectives Wednesday were investigating a dog attack in Lancaster where a 43-year-old man was killed and several others were injured. Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriffs’ Department’s Lancaster Station responded just after 3:10 p.m. Tuesday to the desert area of 20th Street West north of Avenue G regarding a medical rescue call at a homeless encampment. Upon their arrival, they discovered several people had been attacked by a dog and at least two people suffering from injuries, one of whom was unresponsive lying on the ground, said Deputy Tracy Koerner of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The unresponsive man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, Koerner said.
